🔬 How Graduated Cylinders & Liquid Simulation Work

Graduated cylinders are precision scientific instruments designed to measure liquid volume through fluid displacement. When measuring fluids, three key physical factors determine precision:

1. Meniscus Reading

Due to surface tension and adhesion to the glass container walls, liquid surfaces curve. For water and standard aqueous solutions, read the liquid level strictly at the bottom of the concave meniscus at eye level to prevent parallax distortion.

2. Liquid Viscosity & Density

Different fluids behave distinctively inside cylinders. Water has a density of 1.00 g/ML, milk averages 1.03 g/ML, olive oil is lighter at 0.92 g/ML, and honey is dense at 1.42 g/ML. While volume remains constant, gravitational mass differs.

3. Metric Calibration

Modern graduated cylinders are calibrated in Millilitres (ML), where 1 ML is legally defined as exactly 1 cubic centimetre (1 cm³). Our interactive cylinder displays calibration ticks from 0 ML to 1,000 ML (1 full Litre).
